FAQ #9: Is it better for me to take a regular course and get an A or take an AP course and get a B?

ANSWER: Colleges usually respond to this question by saying that getting an A in the AP course is the best move. But that is not a very helpful answer. Here’s a real answer: colleges want to admit students who are highly motivated and who increasingly challenge themselves with rigorous, demanding courses even if that results in the student not getting straight A’s. B’s in AP courses are more impressive than A’s in easier courses. Colleges like it when you take academic risks. When in doubt, take the advanced class. However, for students interested in more selective colleges, if the choice is between a C in an AP course or an A or B in a regular course, the latter choice might be the best one. A lot depends on what other courses you are taking and the things going on in your life.

If taking one more AP class is going to throw you into chaos, impair your health, or negatively affect your grades in other classes, then don’t take it. So do what makes sense.

FACT OF LIFE: The most selective colleges take it for granted that their “admits” will have A’s in practically everything.
